Water Snakes

Southeast Asia

Water snakes are an interesting genus of snakes in Southeast Asia. These aquatic snakes are rear-fanged, making them mildly venomous. The typical feature of water snakes usually include a large, roundish or blocky head, irridescent scales and a stout body. Their primary diet consists of fish and frogs. Some species are found in freshwater areas deep inland, such as streams and rivers in the rainforest, while others only inhabit coastal areas and mangrove swamps. Not all of them are completely aquatic - a few spend a bit of time on land.
