Tokay Gecko

Gekko gekko

The Tokay gecko is one of the largest gecko species in the world. The name 'Tokay' comes from an onomatopoetic description of its loud call. In Peninsular Malaysia, this gecko species is found only among the islands that lie off the northern coastline. Elsewhere, it is native to much of Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. Its colour is bluish to brownish grey with heavy orange spots. This species attains a large size with a fiesty temperament. In 2010, a rumour of Tokays curing numerous diseases went amok around Asia, causing a massive craze and wildfire collection of the lizards as prices soared uncontrollably. The effects till linger till today.
