Swamp Toad

Pseudobufo subasper

The swamp toad is a moderately large species known from peat swamps, especially around great lakes in lowland rainforest regions. It occurs in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra, where it is locally common. The dorsum and flanks are brownish grey, and an orange stripe runs along the spine to the base of the legs. Another pale strips extends from the tympanum to the groin. The belly is completely white. When handled, these toads have a peculiar method of defense by outstretching their limbs and inflating their bellies with air - then laying around like a grounded ballon. Little is known about its ecology, but it is almost completely aquatic.
