The spotted water snake is a secretive species that inhabits marshy areas and swamps, especially those around lowland forest lakes. It fees on fish, and possibly eels in the wild, but little else is known about its ecology. It does appear, however, to be locally common in its habitat. The body is dark with very faint pale spots and short dashes across the back and flanks. The ventrolateral region and belly is olive white, while the head is rotund and spade-like, with a thick jaw and blunt nose. In Southeast Asia, it appears to be restricted to Indonesia, Borneo and Peninuslar Malaysia.
