Amphibians ~ True Frogs ~ Spotted Stream Frog

The spotted stream frog is a beautiful species that is found in lowland to upper-level rainforest, often along streams perched above roots and rocks. There are two forms; the lowland type has a dark top with yellow spots on the dorsum. A bright orange dorsolateral stripe runs from the snout all the way to the back. The sides are peppered with small yellowish patches. The limbs are greyish white with orange bars.

The other form is much more drab in colouration with much more numerous spots on the dorsum. It is also found more often in upper-level rainforest habitat. Some researchers treat both as different species, the lowland form as Rana signata while those found at higher altitudes as Rana picturata. Their call is a quick succession of 'cricks' and uttered rather sporadically. In Southeast Asia, this species occurs in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines.
