Reed Snakes

Southeast Asia

Reed snakes occur widely across Southeast Asia in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Borneo and Indonesia. The name comes from the curved-shaped knives of Gurkha soldiers of which their enlarged razor-sharp rear teeth resemble. Reed snakes are terrestrial and may be active during the day or night. It has been speculated that these snakes may be rear-fanged, but more research is needed to ascertain the truth. In the wild, they feed on eggs, skinks, other snakes and small mammals.
