Red Mountain Rat Snake

Elaphe porphyracea laticincta

Red Mountain Rat Snake
The red mountain racer is a small but stocky rat snake that inhabits the mountain regions of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Here, its only known locality is the Cameron Highlands, where it is quite common, often found near disturbed areas. Crepuscular in nature (but not strictly), this terrestial species is completely red (except for plain white ventrals) with broad, slightly orange bands across the body. Females lays between four to nine eggs, which hatch between 2-4 months (temperature dependent) into yellow-banded juveniles. In the wild, they feed on anything they can catch, including mice and insects (juveniles).
