Red Bellied Keelback

Rhabdophis conspicillata

The red bellied keelback is an attractive snake that occurs in Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia. This small keelback snake has strong ontogenetic colouration. Juveniles are a bright red in colour, except for the head and neck, which remains greyish brown along with white markings running from the orbit, across the neck and along the supralabial region. Adults retain the the head coluration but the reddish body becomes infused with dark chequered markings and yellowish streaks. The ventrals remain reddish. This snake feeds on frogs and fishes, occuring near streams in mid-level rainforest. Otherwise, not much else is known about its ecology.
