Rat Snakes
Southeast Asia |
Rat snakes are a common genera of snakes, mostly of the Elaphe complex. Males tend to be much larger than females; all species lay eggs. The term 'rat snakes' is really a misnomer when applied to Southeast Asian species; most do not feed primarily on rodents, but include it to a varied diet that encompasses lizards, frogs, birds and small mammals. 'Racers' is another popular term for rat snakes, and more approriate as these snakes are mostly agile and fast, with relatively slender body shapes for quick movement on the ground or among tree tops. Rat snakes can be found all across Southeast Asia, with several colourful species known from Malaysia.
