Mangrove cat snakes occur widely across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, with several known subspecies. Specimens from Borneo and Java represent the holotype; subspecies B. d. melanota occurs in Peninsular Malaysia. This large-bodied species is not restricted to mangrove habitats as its name suggests, but found widely inland from lowland to hilly rainforest. The body is black with bold yellow bands; this striking pattern, coupled with aggressive behaviour, often causes it to be mistaken as a highly dangerous species. In the wild, they feed on birds, eggs, snakes, lizards and small mammals.
