Snakes ~ Other Snakes ~ Malayan Ringneck Snake
The Malayan ringneck snake is a rarely-seen but shy and secretive terrestial species found up to mid-level rainforest in Peninsular Malaysia. It also occurs in other parts of Southeast Asia including Singapore, Borneo, Indonesia and the Philippines. This poorly-known snake is quite fast in movement despite its tiny shape and wide girth. It is skittish in temperament but rarely bites.
The head is brown along with the body and tail. The lower jaws and throat are yellow but it becomes brown onwards from the neck. A thin black stripe cuts through the eye from the snout to the neck. In the wild, it hunts insects for prey. A captive specimen took crickets readily. Otherwise, not much is not about the ecology of this species. |
