Leaf Frogs
Southeast Asia
Leaf frogs, horned frogs and litter frogs are some of the names assigned to the Megophrys genus, in which most species are found in Southeast Asia. The leaf frogs are noted for their excellent camouflage, in which they blend in with the forest bed and wait patiently for prey to pass by while evading predators. Some species of this genus, called horned frogs, have unique appendages above their eyelids that are triangular and pointed, giving the appearance of 'horns'. In addition, the leaf frogs have relatively stout bodies and large irises.
Most members of this genus are hardy creatures and voracious predators, feeding on anything they can catch which includes insects and other frogs, including smaller individuals of their own kind. Often, leaf or litter frogs employ an ambush strategy by camouflaging themselves in the forest bed while lying in wait for unsuspecting prey to pass by before springing out to grab them. Leaf frogs are terrestial, nocturnal and employ a very sharp and loud call.
