Snakes ~ Bronzebacks ~ Haas' Bronzeback
Described in 2008 by Gernot Vogel, Haas' bronzeback is yet another new Dendrelaphis species that resembles and occurs sympatrically with Dendrelaphis pictus. It differs from the latter by having a much longer tail, a thinner postocular streak, yellowish irises and a more streamlined snout. The patterns and tone of the body also have subtle nuances, such as lighter brown ventrals and more numerous blue scales.
Haas' bronzeback was named after C.P.J. De Haas, a collector who has contributed much material of scientific value in the study of herpetofauna. It has a shy and skittish temperament, feeding on frogs and lizards in the wild. Dendrelaphis haasi ranges from Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo to Java in Southeast Asia. It may possibly occur in Singapore.
