Lizards ~ Geckos ~ Flying Gecko
Flying geckos are an attractive nocturnal species found in lowland and mid-level rainforests across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Borneo. They are able to glide considerable distances, but not nearly as far as some Draco species. Their flight is enabled by large webbed feet and skin flaps along their limbs, flanks and tails. In Peninsular Malaysia, a few species are known including Pytchozoon kuhlii, Pytchozoon lionotum and Pytchozoon horsfieldii.
In Pytchozoon kuhlii, the body is marbled brown with showerings of dark specks. Their skin flaps are much more extensive compared with Pytchozoon lionotum, which is also more drab in colouration and does not possess a fan-like tail. Pytchozoon horsfieldii is a rare flying gecko species that has a greyish body with bold dark markings on its dorsum.
