Cross Toad

Leptophryne borbonica

The cross toad is a small species that inhabits lowland rainforest. It is a powerful jumper as indicated by its long hind legs. Its base colour is yellowish brown while the belly is greyish. The back has a distinct 'X' marking in the shape of an hourglass, which inspires its name. The groin and underside of the hind legs are pinkish red. The limbs have dark bars; toes are half-webbed while the fingers have none.The head is rather small and pointed in comparison with the body. It does not have a distinct parotoid gland. The cross toad occurs in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Borneo in Southeast Asia.
