 Caecilian Ichthyophis sp
Size: up to 50 cm |
Caecillians are a rarely-seen burrowing amphibian species. They spend their entire lives underground, only appearing out of the earth after heavy rainfall, when excess water has flooded their burrows. It occurs in lowland to mid-level rainforest, often within the vicinity of freshwater streams.
The Caecillian can be identified by its dark body and yellow ventrolateral stripes. The eyes are tiny while the ventrals are bright purple. This species is believed to feed on earthworms and fossorial insects in the wild. Otherwise, its ecology is poorly-known. Caecilians are a widespread species across Southeast Asia, occuring in parts such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Borneo and Thailand.
