Rice Frog in Malaysia
Banded Bull Frog
Kaloula pulchra

The rather stout and chubby frog is a common inhabitant of parks, drains, estates and other disturbed areas. It can also be found in lowland and coastal rainforests. The body is usually brownish with a broad light stripe occuring from the behind each eye towards the groin region. The face is lighter coloured while the belly is greyish, sometimes with dark patches.

In Southeast Asia, this species occurs over all countries including Malaysia, Borneo, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. It is believed to be an introduced species in some parts of the region. The banded bull frog is nocturnal with semi-fossorial tendencies. It is most often seen after heavy rainfall, when it comes out of its burrow.
